Life Lesson: Surrender Is More Powerful Than Control

This is such a seemingly simple phrase which can be taken so lightly but has so much potential to change your life. “Surrender is more powerful than control.”

My revelation of this came to me after exploring forgiveness, seeking direction for my life, and trying to figure out who I am and what I am on this earth for. It’s one of those things that seems obvious to everyone around you because they can judge you externally but if someone said that phrase to me twelve months ago, I wouldn’t have really grasped it’s meaning or paid much attention to it.

It’s only when you are seeking that you can truly embrace a new idea. It’s only then that you find revelation in something so simple. “Those who seek, shall find.”

For me, I like to control. I like to control my environment. I like to control the things I care deeply about. I even like to control how others perceive me. It’s something passed on from my mother. It’s not all bad. It’s a great business skill and has helped me make a lot of money.

While it has been good in business, it’s not so good in personal life. It’s not so good when trying to figure out direction for my life, and what I am on this earth for. It means I have trouble letting go and going with the flow. Letting the universe guide my path. I also wonder if I could have achieved more in business previously if I didn’t try to control things so much. The constant need for control didn’t serve me well in my marriage and broke down the relationship I had with my wife.

There is a fantastic video on youtube by Michael Beckwith titled “Questions to Ask the Universe to Help Unfold your Biggest Gifts”. I encourage you to watch it, plug in your earphones and turn it up loud. The music behind it is very inspiring and has an awesome impact on you when you can hear the bass resonating though your ears. For me, I listened to it while walking along the beach in the afternoon as the sun was setting. It brought me to tears, it made me think about a lot of things in my life, emotions I had buried and I had an important revelation from which in time my life will never be the same.

It’s important to identify when words or things appear more than once, when the universe or God gives you signs for what to pay attention to. The word “surrender” came up a few times and in the context of what I was seeking and it struck a chord with me.

For some, the word “surrender” has a weak connotation to it. For me it did. I would associate it with these phrases: “Never surrender… Fight the good fight… Fight until the last breath” but in the greater scheme of life and after listening to the video, it has a more powerful meaning.

My revelation was to stop trying to control my situation and the things around me. Stop and listen. Surrender my mind and life to the perfect will of the universe. Only in doing so can I truly tap into the abundant power that is waiting for me, wanting to help me achieve my ultimate purpose on this earth.

The word “powerful” is very relevant in this statement. Surrendering may not seem powerful, but even Jesus surrendered. He surrendered his life on the cross, even with all of the power he had at his disposal to control his situation he chose to give up control and surrender his own life. In doing so, he gave humanity the greatest gift ever given. Think about the subsequent power of that act.

So for me, the revelation is in surrendering my desire for control over my life to the will of something greater. Not only the big picture stuff, but also in the small things. Everyday life. There is power in asking the universe to show you what is next, asking it to open doors for you. Asking if a road should be travelled or not, and if not, trusting.

What a weight off my mind. Now I don’t need to worry so much. I don’t need to fight destiny. I can live in harmony with great power guiding me.

I hope my revelation helped you in some way. This is one of those things that makes so much sense when you experience that revelation moment for yourself and get your own understanding. If you do want to experience it, all you need do is seek.
